Bioretec manufactures medical devices and bioabsorbable orthopedic implants. The company, headquartered in Tampere’s Yrittäjänkulma, sells its products in over 40 countries.

Finnish company’s, named Bioretec, developed and manufactured products include so-called active implants, which promote bone growth and accelerate fracture healing after orthopedic surgeries. While the product is commercialized in the United States, it is still manufactured in Tampere.

“Previously, bioabsorbable products were made from biodegradable plastics. We were the first in the world to receive FDA approval for a bioabsorbable metal. This benefits both the patient and society because traditional metal implants are usually removed after surgery, but our product gradually degrades, allowing bone to replace it,” explains Bioretec’s CEO, Timo Lehtonen.

Yrittäjänkulma enables expansion

Under Lehtonen’s leadership, Bioretec has grown significantly. With growth came the need for new facilities, and the company found a suitable location in Yrittäjänkulma, Tampere in 2021. Originally known as Tamm-Park, the property is an old industrial building with opportunities for expansion. Initially, there was 330 square meters of office space and 750 square meters of production space. This year, the production space was expanded, and now it is already almost 1300 square meters.

“With Bioretec’s growth, we wanted to find a place where we could build operational facilities as quickly as possible and expand as needed. Yrittäjänkulma offered us the ideal setting. There was suitable office space for us. We built our own cleanroom and laboratory space in the factory hall, which is essentially a factory within a factory,” says Timo Lehtonen.

A cleanroom is a space or room where operations are conducted according to strict cleanliness requirements. The number of particles present is minimized, and the room’s temperature, humidity, and air pressure are monitored.

“We had the cleanroom made ourselves because it has very precise requirements that were validated according to European regulatory standards.”

The property’s services simplify everyday life

Bioretec also values the property’s other diverse services, such as the lunch restaurant, lobby services, and meeting facilities, which make the tenant’s daily life easier.

“As a high-tech company, it is also especially important to us that premises are safe and monitored. An added bonus is the property’s auditorium, which is convenient when we organize events such as training sessions for doctors or the annual general meeting. There’s no need to rent premises from outside,” reflects Lehtonen.
